  • Pushed Slab: MVRDV designs the first Eco-quarter of Paris

Eco Factor: Energy efficient office building. A former 4.150sqm rail embankment site will soon hold the first Eco-quarter of Paris. French project developer ICADE Promotion has commissioned MVRDV to design the Pushed Slab office building at ZAC Gare de Rungis in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, France. The 35 million Euro building will have low energy consumption and an energy production of nearly 200.000kWh annually. Based on the requested office program and the energy requirements, the project merges proven energy efficiency technologies with individual office floors and outside spaces such as patios, balconies and a garden. The exterior of the building is beautifully covered with certified wood from France. To create an urban window and to enhance the urban quality of the neighborhood, the slab is pushed until it breaks, creating a distortion of the floors that offers multiple terraces. The 500sqm solar panels installed on the roof provide renewable energy will help in meeting terms with the energy requirements. Other green features include natural ventilation to control inner climate, a gray water circuit and exterior insulation to reduce thermal bridges. All these features will reduce the energy consumption to 49 kWh/sqm annually, resulting in a highly efficient low energy building. For this first of its kind project in Paris, MVRDV is taking help from local architect North by North West, ARCOBA, Casso, Terrell, Vanguard and Alto. Via: Arch Daily
